Note - We first ran this in August of 2009. After this weekends events at The Masters, I felt like it may be worthy of a repost. Some of the comments about Tiger are also ironic given what we didn’t know then.

**********

In case you don’t know who F.I.G.J.A.M. is, then clearly you’re not a reader of Wei Under Par.

For all two of you who don’t know, it is reportedly Phil Mickelson’s nickname bestowed upon him by some fellow tour pros.

It stands for: F*ck I‘m Good, Just Ask Me!

Funny stuff. I respect a good nickname like anyone else. And NiceBallz is not above poking fun at Phil on occasion.

But here’s the thing that I don’t get and doubt I ever will, barring Mickelson being found with his pants around his ankles, delivering a shot out of the deep rough to his kids’ nanny while Amy is in the hospital being treated for cancer.

I don’t get when people say they ‘hate him’ or find him to be a ‘phony’ or ‘think he’s a jerk.’

Arguably many who say those things are fans. And fans, if nothing else, have an inalienable right to hate or love certain athletes if for no other reason than what color jersey they wear, or for other equally meaningless reasons.

However, there are those anonymous tour players who supposedly created the F.I.G.J.A.M. nickname, and secretly whisper into the ears of mainstream media reporters and bloggers alike about how Phil is really just a big phony and all the knuckle bumping, cap tipping and autograph signing is just for the cameras.

To that I say: Who is the real phony?

Golf is meant to be a gentleman’s game (allegedly) and yet unnamed touring pros who have Tiger Woods to thank for the ridiculous checks they have a chance to cash every week can also thank guys like Mickelson, Vijay, Padraig, Sergio and many more who came before them for their livelihood. These are the guys who (admittedly with Tiger leading the way) have made being a touring professional on the PGA a dream gig, even if you hover somewhere around 60th on the money list.

In fact, here’s an excerpt from the GQ article that was among the first to publicly throw out the F.I.G.J.A.M. name:

Most recently, Mickelson blew off the 2005 Tour Championship, though the PGA was in the midst of negotiating its new TV contract. One reporter says, “The Tour was trying to come up with a plan that would make the networks happy, so it wouldn’t have to give back a lot of money, and here’s the number three player in the world skipping the premier season-ending event. Other players said, ‘How about helping the rest of us who aren’t as rich?’”

Wow…‘helping the rest of us who aren’t as rich.’ Yeah, those PGA touring pros. When will they get decent healthcare and a good living wage? For God’s sake, someone think of the little future golfers of the world … think of the children!

Here’s a novel idea for that player and any other who whines about Mickelson behind his back … play better … earn more money … get more endorsements, and generally shut up.

Either Mickelson has anti-Christ like charm that results in his ability to fool half the golfing population (at least) into thinking he’s a good guy, or -wait for it - a handful of people are jealous of his incredible talent, wealth, stature, public recognition and fan adoration and they take the opportunity to anonymously piss and moan about him behind his back.

Golly. Which seems more likely?

To be clear, I’m not a Phil fanboy. Or a Tiger fanboy for that matter. I think I generally have the same attitudes about them as most rationale people do.

Tiger is amazing, arguably the best ever and his talent combined with his results speak for themselves.

Phil is also an amazing talent who, were it not for one Eldrick Woods, probably would be considered by many as the greatest of his time. He also seems to generally be a good person, and someone who takes the time to try and make any fans interaction with him as meaningful as possible.

But neither of them are perfect. Far from it. We’ve all seen some of Tiger’s less-than-admirable traits. Phil is probably just better at concealing his from the public.

So what? After all, how many of us would like the whole world to know what self-centered, petty and immature characters we can be at any given time? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

If some touring pro has a beef with Mickelson I’d have a great deal more respect for them if they just came out, ON THE RECORD and said: “Look, I think the guy is a jerk and here is why…” than I do for any anonymous source who is content to whine about why Mickelson isn’t doing more to help make them rich. Or why he’s really not that nice … or that he’s arrogant.

We’re sure he has a fully-formed ego like any top athlete, so let’s not even get into the irony of one pro calling another arrogant. Puhhhlleeease.

Sports are sports and they’ll always have their share of heels and heroes. We all inherently find reasons to like or dislike certain athletes.

But for the touring pros who can’t stop themselves from acting like a catty sorority member on pledge night when it comes to their fellow professionals, maybe they should stop and just take a look at Y.E. Yang, Angel Cabrera, Lucas Glover and Stewart Cink for some perspective on what is going to get them further – gossip or goals?

I’m guessing Stewart Cink thinks Lambert is the more unwatchable based on this tweet, and this one…oh and this one from his wife.

I wonder if it was the S&M stuff, the kissing the woman above or…I’m betting it was the pelvic face humping (see 1:06 below…you know you wanna). Personally I think people should be a lot more offended by the singing.

While Kim has denied any after-hours activities, we have received, from reliable sources, a number of texts to and from AK that may counter that denial. Read for yourself and decide.

Mayor: What do you mean, “biblical”?

Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.

Dr. Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!

Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes…

Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

That’s what we’re heading for my friends if this FedEx Cup thing continues. Ok, maybe the dead won’t rise.

Sure, Phil won…oh and so did Tiger. And this isn’t the Ryder Cup or the President’s Cup or a Cup o’Noodles(which are underrated in their deliciousness by the way)…but the FedEx Cup has done what no one thought possible – deliver a seemingly satisfying result in one tournament to Tiger and Phil fanboys alike. The end is near.

There’s really nothing to add to the commentary at this point on the general FUBAR‘dness of the FedEx Cup.

Sure, it gave a moment of rare mutual satisfaction for many in the golf world. But it feels similar to when the college football national championship was decided by different polls and you had one team claiming they were the champs, just like another. Unsatisfying.

Like most things, there is a good Seinfeld reference to explain it all. The FedEx Cup is the Bizarro World of golf. I’ll let Jerry explain.

At NiceBallz we had to endure four days of hellish golf TV viewing to get four hours of great drama only to be left with an unsatisfactory conclusion to the U.S. Open. Here, three days late because we have day jobs and it took us that long to figure out why we care, are our thoughts on the 109th U.S. Open.

Tedious TV – Watching the U.S. Open this year was a chore. Sure, the USGA and NBC couldn’t do anything about the poor weather. We know. But viewers never knew which round they were watching. Was it live or a replay? If you stepped out of the room it was difficult to know. So there wasn’t the same mounting drama we usually get. It was disjointed. Then they cut to Al Roker, “America’s weatherman,” a little too often. Finally, NBC showed replays of last year’s U.S. Open at Torrey Pines during another rain delay at Bethpage. Yeah, last year was epic, but did we need to see it again? When I stepped away once and came back to watch Tiger, wearing red, was in the right rough on 18. I thought it was live. Then they showed Rocco Mediate watching nervously in the clubhouse, and I knew I’d been conned. Watching this year’s Open was a joke. I’m not sure what else NBC or the USGA could have done. Nothing really. But watching this year was weak sauce.

Sergio Redeemed? - Seven years ago at the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage, the New York fans heckled the hell out of Sergio Garcia, then a younger and more boorish golfer who waggled incessantly. This year the fans seemed to cut him some slack. Yeah, he doesn’t waggle 43 times before a shot anymore. Thank you! And, perhaps his recent broken heart made Sergio a more sympathetic figure. Nowhere was the newfound affection more evident than when Sergio sprayed his drive on No. 1 way left on Sunday afternoon. He pitched out of the tall grass into a trampled dirt patch where the gallery had been. The people could have skewered him for unraveling in their midst. But when directing patrons out of his way for a third recovery shot, Sergio asked for the man with the kid to move. Rather than heckle him further a few of the more boisterous crowd yelled, “Move the kid! Get back kid!” It was as if the crowd was on Sergio’s side. Quite a change from last time Sergio roamed this public golf course. He even got a few pats on the back when he returned to the fairway, effectively returning to good graces with the rough New York crowds.

Phil Nonchalant About Losing - Phil Mickelson had Lucas Glover right where he wanted him. Then, like so many times before, Phil missed two makeable putts and bogeyed two of the last four holes to lose by two strokes. In doing so, he set a record for finishing in second place a fifth time. Yet Phil has never been more blasé about losing. His wife has cancer. She’ll undergo surgery in a few days. Phil wanted to win yet he didn’t and it didn’t seem to matter. Maybe he has bigger things to worry about. Maybe his priorities are in the right place. But he seemed to care less than ever. Maybe it’s because he knows he’ll eventually win one. I think he will and I think he knows it. Good for him.

Tiger, Tiger Woods, y’all! - Did luck of the draw doom Tiger? Maybe, though he wasn’t exactly whining about it. At the same time, Champions find a way to get it done and Tiger, uncharacteristically, didn’t on Sunday (wait, we mean Monday). More disappointingly Tiger failed to come from behind to win a Major yet again. He gave us epic drama, but in the end came up short and we are left to wonder – Is this a year when Tiger goes 0-fer in Majors? Personally, we think the PGA Championship at Hazeltine has his name all over it.

David Duval - David Duval has been hard to like at times. When he was on top of the world many people found him stand-offish. Aloof. Distant. Even arrogant. How wrong. The man was simply focused on the task at hand and has clearly been doing the same for the past several years. Aside from Mickelson winning, Duval was our favorite, but a heartbreaking miss on 17 dashed any hopes. We’d be satisfied with the runner-up status if he can use this as a springboard for a return to the winner circle – whether in a regular PGA tour event or a major. It would be great to see the man behind the shades emerge from the shadows once more.

Ricky Barnes – We’ve seen a lot of people speculate that this is the beginning of great things for Ricky. Unless he gets some serious coaching up to fix the swing flaws that were painfully obvious on Monday we say – UNLIKELY. Nothing personal, we pulled for Barnes who handled the spotlight with great poise and affability. But his performance in the final round was as predictable as a romantic comedy screenplay: Boy meets Open, Boy woos Open, Boy loses Open. The only difference was in this case – Barnes (Boy) did not win Open back. Unhappy ending indeed.

Lucas Glover - What is not to like about Lucas Glover? Soft spoken. Deferential. Respectful. A grinder. A worker. In many ways everything a U.S. Open is meant to embody – anyone can win if you work hard enough. It’s also why this Open will almost certainly go down as a completely forgettable event except for it being the latest of a string of chances Mickelson missed his chance on, or where (we hope) David Duval began a tremendous comeback. If he proves us wrong and wins another major or two we would like nothing more – but odds (and past history of relative ‘unknowns’ winning) are against it.

The USGA Got Its Man - The USGA got the champion they want. Lucas Glover fits the mold. He is boring and consistent. Fairways and greens, and two putts. The USGA doesn’t necessarily try to identify the best golfer; we already know who that is. The USGA seems to want to find the most consistent golfer over four days, and one who can manage his game by remaining emotionless. Lucas Glover is in the mold of Trevor Immelman, Michael Campbell, Rich Beem, Ben Curtis, Steve Jones, Shaun Micheel or Todd Hamilton as recent major championship winners that casual golf fans have never heard of. But this is who the USGA wants to win. He finds a lot of fairways and makes a lot of putts. Lucas Glover reminds us of Stewart Cink or Chad Campbell, two other players who we think someday could win a U.S. Open. Not the best players in the world, just consistent guys without big weaknesses in their game.

It’s difficult to find a great deal to write about, to crack funny on or to pontificate over when it comes to golf right now.

It’s hard to do that when you hear the news about Amy Mickelson.

So we won’t even try.

Instead, as individuals who have had acquaintances, friends and family members (Corey’s mom is a breast cancer survivor — proving that diagnosis is not a death sentence) impacted by this disease we simply ask that anyone who happens upon our blog today take some time to visit any one of the fine organizations below and consider making a donation, sharing the info with a friend who is affected, or just generally making yourself smarter about the topic.

Like everyone, we send our best wishes to Amy Mickelson and her family. Regardless of how much we may like to poke fun at Phil, we believe he’s always presented himself as a decent human being and a man who cares about his family. We wish them all strength in this time.

Golf’s no stranger to tragedy and triumph when it comes to cancer. From Darren Clarke’s loss to Paul Azinger’s recovery there are many stories worth remembering. The game will go on without Phil and we’ll all be ready for his return, whenever that time may be.

Again, if you happen across our silly blog today, please take some time to check out the below. Or add any other good resources in our comments for others to see. We’d also like to humbly suggest that other golf bloggers provide similar links and words of encouragement on their pages if they haven’t done so already (Note: I just saw Shane Bacon did this earlier as well…good on him).

Thanks,
