Jim Furyk’s Management Team Secretly Hates Him

June 12, 2009 / Posted in Commentary/Opinion, Humor/Satire, Media

I like Jim Furyk.  He seems like a nice guy.  He has an unconventional swing that works.  He’s always been unassuming and rarely if ever has come off as a member of the large hubris club that is on tour.

Which is why I was surprised when I reached the conclusion that his management team secretly hates him.

How did I realize this?  I had my suspicions when they signed him up for these lame Srixon commercials.

And then I was convinced he is loathed by those closest to him when the latest GolfWorld landed at my stoop.

Exhibit A

Whoa baby.  I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in this pitch meeting:

“No really Jimmy, show your lighter side!  You’re a funny guy people should get to know that part of you!”

“Really guys, ya think this works?”

“Absoluckinflutely.”

Exhibit B

Clown shoes.  Goddam clown shoes.  This is what you’ve been reduced to Jim.  The clown shoes guy.  Really?  Did we have to go this far?  No, the answer is no.

In fairness I haven’t read the article yet.  It could be wonderful and worth the photographic humiliation.  It’s written by John Hawkins though so…suffice to say I have some doubts.

I don’t know why the people around Furyk despise him.  But here’s hoping he sees this and gets out while he can.  They may not be satisfied with killing his image. Next it could get personal.

Hack likes Jim Furyk and is sure that this cover shoot was his way of showing his lighter side and that he doesn’t take himself too seriously.  Message received. Golf is an endlessly fascinating sport with lots of interesting and charismatic players, however producing an exciting, high quality, must-read weekly magazine about it, particularly in these times of instant “golf news gratification” via the internet, has got to be a Herculean task.

Also, the players…even the top players… now have trouble getting (and keeping) lucrative sponsorships.

This ridiculous photo shoot is the result of the ensuing desperation.

I heard his agent told Furyk those pictures would only appear in magazines sold in Moldavia.

Wouldn’t you have to take a cart with clown shoes?
We sure wouldn’t want to revive that old controversial PGA issue again.
Might take us back down to Georgia.

You know that Furyk is going to be hearing it in the locker for quite a while about those pictures. I feel sorry for him.

Addendum: I read the article and sadly it reinforced two things.

    - Jim Furyk comes off as a nicer guy than I could have guessed. Almost made me feel bad for the above post, almost — if it weren’t funny.

    - John Hawkins and GW were unsurprisingly disappointing. The photography was, predictably, a prop. Hawkins came off as nearly gleeful in the absurdity of getting Furyk to do it. Classy.

It’s little wonder print media in general is rapidly approaching life support status.

We would never claim writing for a living is easy…because we do it. It’s work, hard damn work.

Which is why it is all the more disappointing when we see someone getting paid to ‘mail it in’-snail mail no less.

Tiger says Furyk’s hilarious. Dry wit.

Even that semi-Barkley hitch in his swing is just for laughs.

    Hey Hack,

Your screen name is appropriate. Instead of bashing other writers and publications creativity, why don’t you show a bit of your own and post something original. I’ve got a feeling that originality is not a club you carry. Furyk, Hawkins and Golf World are class acts, unlike niceballs…

Hiya Highcut – Welcome to the blog.

Seeing as how this is your first comment here I can only assume you haven’t had a chance to meander around the other entries we’ve done – a vast majority of which are based entirely upon our own creativity…and every post is actually original though they may at times (as we say in our About Us section) provide an unvarnished commentary on all things golf – writing/media/players included.

And if you’d have read the post closely you’d see actually we think Furyk is a class act too…a victim of poor counseling here? Yep, that’s our take.

And nothing against Hawkins other than he’s never written anything I’ve been too impressed by. I’m sure he’d say the same thing about me if he ever read any of our stuff (which I’m sure he hasn’t).

Thanks for the comments! Oh and it’s niceballz with a Z.
