Cartoonz by NiceBallz: Senior Citizen Doping?
Tom Watson is atop the Senior British Open; he must be on something. Why golf needs to expand the list of drugs it tests players for…
Ever watched a pro golf TV broadcast? Of course you have. According to marketing demographic research, U.S. golf fans are mostly old and infirmed men so you can’t miss the advertisements for Viagra, Cialis, Flomax and Advair.
These wonder drugs are aimed at curing what ails an aging Baby Boomer population, including erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostates and smoking-related breathing problems among others.
But, if you recently watched The Open Championship, the world’s oldest major golf tournament, you were surprised to see that a 59-year-old Tom Watson dramatically beat all but one of the so-called young guns. The self-described old geezer nearly shocked the world by winning at a time when big pharmaceutical corporations and the prevailing social culture tells us that gramps should be heavily medicated, not dominating the world’s best golfers.
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem recently crowed that professional golf doesn’t have a doping problem. But, we wonder do they test the Senior, err, Champions Tour? And, are they checking for the right drugs? It looked to us like Watson’s blood was pumping, his juices were flowing and he was breathing just fine last week. Sheesh. Now, a week later he’s again in contention atop the Senior British Open. He must be on something. Cholesterol medication, if nothing else.

Well, he did have hip replacement not too long ago. Do you think he was taking something to speed the recovery…a little steroid perhaps?
