What would Wie make the headlines?
Getting a chance to watch Michelle Wie play live can open your eyes to what has gotten people so excited the past several years about her potential.
At least, if you catch her on a good day – which Friday was at the LPGA Safeway Classic.
She finished at -4 with a chip in for birdie on No. 18 that drew a huge roar from the sizable Friday crowd. Wie currently sits at T-11 and remains in the hunt.
So allow us for a moment to jump into the fast forward hype machine and think about what the headlines would be if Wie manages to snag her first win on the LPGA tour at Pumpkin Ridge.
The Obvious
“Wie knows the way!”- See how that works? Just use the way Michelle Wie’s name sounds to replace the word ‘we’ and you too can be a headline writer and make gajillions!
The Solheim link
“Wie can’t be friends.”- Only used if Wie wins by beating one of her former Solheim teammates. Most likely candidates of Kerr, C. Kim and Gulbis.
The Louis Armstrong
“What a Wie-derful World”- The headline will serve as a precursor to a slew of Youtube montages with the Armstrong’s unmistakable voice intercut with shots of Wie hoisting the Safeway trophy above her head.
The Jeffersons
“Wie-zzy is Movin’ On Up!” – Only the most hardcore Jefferson’s fan will pull this out of their bag o’tricks. But it’ll happen.
But for now we’ll put our flux capacitor’s into storage and just be content to wait and see how Wie and her fellow LPGA players do over the weekend.
Wie are excited to see what happens next.

What’s more? Brazillions or gajillions! Not that it matters, my cash flow jingles in my pocket as I walk, but just curious. She’s 19-years old and I think she still has another year or two left in her. Do you think you could have absorbed the beatings the press gave her for five years from eighth grade to sophomore in college? I couldn’t've. (need word, ain’t it?)
I thing she is becoming the real deal. I’ll tell you another thing, guys, that Stephanie Wei (weiunderpar.com) is becoming the real deal and is creating quite a presence, as are you two, in our little incestuous golf blogosphere…
yes – all that hype – she’s what…6’8″ tall now ? Drives it well over 400 yards…right ?
All that hype and she’s STILL 4 shots back. The machine never mentions that part.
Pretty swing…GORGEOUS swing…lots of potential…nice smile…ok, can’t speak English very well, but she knows her cliche’s…and she is the focus of the entire tour. That’s a lot of pressure on a 19 year old.
OEG I have always wondered if an a$$load is more than a sh!tload or vice versa. Some questions are too big for us to answer I guess.
Of course we think Wie has a couple of miles left on her tires. But today (Sat.) was a rough day. We just are continually left to wonder when will her parents decide to quit shadowing her (like they are here) and what sort of impact that would have on her just being able to loosen up and enjoy herself on the course. I think it would be significant over time.
If Stephanie Wei and NiceBallz had a love child what do you think the blogsphere would name it? NiceWei, WeiNice? Or just WeiunderBallz?
After having spent a few days in a ‘traditional’ media room I can only tell you we’d just like to see all of us who do this stupid blogging thing succeed in whatever way that means the most to us.
Court – She actually used an Oregon marionberry vine to floss her teeth this morning and hit her #1 tee shot one handed 267 yds into the wind and rain (the wind and rain part is true actually).
FWIW I believe Gulbis was exactly as many strokes back as Wie after 1 round but put herself into contention for tomorrow. So I think Wie deserved credit for a solid (very solid, not great) round 1, just as she deserves more (and more and more as unfortunately seems to often be the case) questions about a lackluster, if not downright poor, round 2.
